August 24, 1946, MacFadden l2-mile Swamp, Benton Co. 1 - 3 p.m. The swamp is the driest that I have ever seen it. There were just two very small pools of water in the entire swamp. Both of these were under the two bridges on the gravel road going thru the swamp. No ducks, or Red-wing blackbirds were seen. Something quite unusual. The following were seen. Blue Heron - two of them flew over the area while I was there. Turkey Vulture - quite a few of them circling around this area. Sparrow Hawk - one young perched on a telephone pole. An adult on a fence post. Valley Quail - in one of the fence rows. There were only 4 or 5 of them. Ring-necked Pheasant - one taking gravel in the road just past the swamp. Coot - There were two of them on the largest pool of water. One of them took off after a run of about 25 feet. The other one did it in about 20 feet. Mourning Dove - Adults and young wer e common along the fence rows. Vaux Swift - several over the swamp area after insects. Violet-green Swallow- many of them foraging back and forth across the fields and swamp area, in company with Barn Swallows - There were plenty of these, too. Tule Wren - Saw just one of these in the Spirea of the swamp area. Cedar Waxwings Pacific Yellowthroat - 2 of them were in one of the fence rows bordering the swamp. English Sparrow W. Meadowlark Savannah Sparrow - in the fields between the hiway and the swamp. Willow Goldfinches common - adults and young Oregon Towhee Vesper Sparrow- a few of them near the swamp. Song Sparrows - young birds very common in the swamp area.
