Oregon Junco - On July 29th, 3 Junco eggs had hatched in the a.m., and another by noon of the 29th. I found the nest, on the ground, under trees and sheltered by the blades of a Squaw Grass clump. Nest lines with needles and dry grass. On Aug. 5th they were well-feathered out, but all feathers and grayish down were short. August 6, 1946 - Temple and Davis Lake, Linn Co. Amer. Rough-legged Hawk Flicker - very common. Clarke Nutcrackers - quite noisy from the tops of snags. Must have been young. Little Flycatcher Olive-sided Flycatcher Chestnut-backed Chickadee Red-breasted Nuthatch - literally dozens of them today. adults and young. Cassin Vireo Western Tanager, female Pine Siskins. August 7, 1946 - Camp Pioneer, Linn Co. Harris Woodpecker - banded size #2-41-224295 American Three-toed Woodpecker - a pair working the P. ponder contorta early a.m. Gray Jays Clarke Nutcrackers - right in camp early in the morning. Hermit Warblers - by Order of the Arrow lake. Turkey Vulture - 2 of them hovering over a nearby ridge. Pacific Nighthawk - actually saw one come in low over the lake about 11 a.m. August 9, 1946 - Red Butte Lake, Linn Co. Bufflehead; and 4 young swimming in the lake this a.m. Sharp-shinned Hawks - a pair seemed to have a nest in a snag high up the butte. Golden Eagle - watched one soar over at not-too high an elevation. Rufous Hummingbirds - still quite thick about the rock slide of Red Butte. Violet-green Swallows Gray Jay and young - they were the typical bluish gray color. Very curious. August 9, 1946 - Jorn Lake, Linn Co.
