July 7, 1946 Abiqua-Silver Creek Ridge, Marion County; headwaters of the Abiqua. Blue Grouse were seen frequently in the road, as we drove into the creek. Dippers were seen along the creek, two were young, and one adult. A Flicker was in a nesting hole of a snag, near the creek, and it was calling out loud and long, evidently for its mate to come and relieve it from its duties at the nest. It paid no attention when I hit the base of the snag with a large stick. July 9, 1946, Abiqua creek, below Abiqua Camp. A young Dipper preening itself. A most adult stage. Didn't teeter even once in the five minutes I watched. It fell all over itself once trying to scratch the top of its head, first with the left and then the right foot. July 12, 1946 - On gravel road near Sidney ditch, north of Talbot, Oregon. A Turkey Vulture was perched on a short electric wire pole as I drove up, so I coasted to a stop opposite it, and turned the radio music quite loud, and the bird, looked all around below it, trying to determine the sound, and then I whistled passages of the tune, and the bird almost fell off its perch each time I did, for it would cock its head to one side and then the other with rapid jerks. Finally it raised its wings, stretched them horizontally, and leaped off the pole top and flew. July 13, 1946 m- Croisan Gulch, SW of Salem Oregon Chickadee trilling and fanning and shivering its wings rapidly before its mate, as she continued feeding non chalantly on the oak tree limbs. Wood Ducks and young were seen at Hazelaure lake near the Salem Golf Course. Green Heron - perched on log raft in a slough be the railroad, SW Salem. July 17, 1946 July 18, 1946 - "Poison Oak" Lake, Linn Co. That built Located a pair of Anthony Green Herons building a nest, 12' over water on the northwest side of an ash tree on the SE side of the lake. Made out of large twigs + smaller ones inside it. I didn't climb to the meet, for the tree is too small. I could see no young in it, or eggs, either. watched a wood Duck dabbling in the shallow water near where I sat. It would leap up & pull down developed grass heads. a pair of Pied-bill grebes are on the pond, too. Collected a young Ruffed Grouse about 4 weeks old out on Oake Creek ridge. The gizzard was bulging with blackberry seeds, another, large seed O, + some grit pieces. The crop was filled with Cascara berries. July 18 - Stewart Lake, N of Corvallis Found another Anthony's Green Heron nest this p. m., but it had already been used. It was on the east side of the lake in a "lagoon" surrounded by vegetation. It was at 15' over the water in the fork of a willow tree. The nest was not over 10"-12" diameter, (the main part) for a few miles. twigs were longer. Material was piled 4"-5" deep & formed a saucer-up which was lined with finer twigs - all laid in the same direction, parallel to each other. The large twigs appeared woven.
