24 May, 1946, Kiger Island, SE of Corvallis, Willamette R., 8 - 1130 a.m. - Mourning Dove, - W. Belted Kingfisher - Rufous Hummingbird - Valley Quail - paired up. - Pheasant - Mallards - C. Purple Finch - Redwings - Oregon Chickadees - Pacific Yellowthroat - Gairdner's Woodpecker - Red-breasted Sapsucker - Wood Ducks - Tree Swallows - W. Meadowlark (repeat) - a young one, about half-grown. Flew well. White outer tail feathers. A pretty fair day considering everything, and the short time we were out. -W. Spotted Sandpipers -Killdeer -Vulture -Rough-winged Swallow -Robin -Yellow Warbler -Oregon Towhee -W. Meadowlarks -Long-tailed Chats - quite a few of them, and they gave a great variety of calls this a.m. -W. Redtail Hawk -Brewer Blackbird -Sora Rail -English Sparrow -Pileolated Warbler -Lutescent Warbler -Cassin Vireo -Warbling Vireo - 1st of the year. -MacGillivray's Warbler -Willow Goldfinch -Song Sparrow -Russet-backed Thrush -Coast Jay -W. Crow -Violet-green Swallows 398 east wind. 25 May, 1946 Peoria Ferry, Willamette River - 0630 to 0900. Drizzle and 15 ovc. Had a total list of about 45 birds this a.m. The following were of interest. -Rufous Hummingbird - found nest on limb of Ash tree at 15-20 feet. In shade on NW side. -Red-breasted Sapsucker - At least 8 or 10 pair of them seen this a.m. in the immediate vicinity of the river. All were beautifully bright red. Found one nest hole at about 20-25 feet in Ash Tree, opening to the WSW. One adult flew in, and then the other came to the nest, lighting below it; chattering went on between them, and the bird on the nest flew out, and the other went in the hole immediately. -Vesper Sparrow - Saw several, and approached one closely, that was singing. -Warbling Vireo - heard and saw this bird again. -Black-throated Gray-Warbler - saw one, and heard them singing frequently. -Cedar Waxwing - a few small flocks in the area. -Kingfisher - On MacBee Slough. -Raven - a single one flew over our group, giving its croak-call. -Band-tailed Pigeon - We saw a flock of 60-80 of them in a grain field beside the Pacific Highway at 615, as we went out. All took to the air as we approached. 399 25 May, 1946. just north of Ferguson, Lane, Co., 3 p.m. - Came upon 11 Turkey Vultures, each perched upon a fence post in a continuous group. Quite an odd site to see. 400 1 June, 1946. Mary's Peak, to the top, and vicinity. 2 - 5 p.m. -Mountain Quail, beautifully colored individuals seen along highway near base of mtn. -Audubon Warblers working through the Noble Fir just below timberline on the east side. -White-crowned Sparrows - a pair of them acted "residual" just below the top, south side. 401 There were Evening Grosbeaks on May 28, 1946, but seem to be none as of June 1, 1946. 402 June 7, 1946 - 1245 noon, Woodburn, Oregon - First Nighthawk of the year. My folks & I were in the back yard when I heard this old familiar call & I looked up above & saw its "floppy" flight as it headed northward.
