April 26, 1946 - Mary's River between Corv. and Philomath and south to l2-mile Swamp. Cloudy, windy, and scattered heavy rain showers. With Bill Graf Mallard - saw a drake swimming with 3 Hooded Merganser females in a pool near the Marys R. Pintail - a few in the l2-mile swamp. Shoveller - Saw several males and females. Seemed to be more or less paired up. Hooded Merganser - mentioned above Turkey Vulture - common Red-tailed Hawk - saw a couple Sparrow Hawk Valley Quail - giving their "whippoorwill" call along the Mary's R. Bob White - saw them many places along the way south. Pheasant - Bill's dog worked a weed patch and fence row and flushed one. Killdeer - saw several and located one pair nesting, alotho we couldn't find the nest. Wilson Snipe - a few near the swamp. Spotted Sandpiper - saw one along the banks of the Mary's R. Mourning Doves, a few. Rufous Hummingbird - saw two, and both were working the larkspur blossoms along the river. NW Flicker - saw one along the river. Lewis's Woodpecker - We saw this one on a fence post along a road just south and Streaked Horned Lark - saw two out on the flats near Greenberry. Violet-green Swallow - saw them everywhere. Bank Swallow - Saw a few along the edge of the Mary's river. Rough-winged Swallow - saw them circling in a fairly large flock over the swamp. Barn Swallow - funny thing, but they were flying around a barn ! Long-tailed Jay - along the Mary's river. Western Crow - a few here and there. Coast Bush Tit - along the river. Robin - here and there. Lutescent Warbler - along the Mary's river. E. Yellow Warbler - same Audubon's Warbler - same Black-throated Gray Warbler - same Macgillivray's Warbler - same Pacific Yellowthroat - same and at the swamp. Eng. Sparrow - everywhere. W. Meadowlark - everywhere Redwings - at the swamp. Brewer Blackbird - everywhere. Calif. Purple Finch - along the Mary's river. Oregon Towhee - here and there. Savannah Sparrow - on the flats south of Corvallis. OregonVesper Sparrow - on the flats south of Corvallis. W. Chipping Sparrow - along the Mary's river. White-crowned Sparrow - at the swamp. Golden-crowned Sparrow - at the swa p. Song Sparrow - everywhere. 3 May, 1946 End of Brook Lane, Corvallis, Oregon. 8 a.m. I went out to the Mourning Dove nest found on April 11th, to band the young. As I approached the nest I saw the adult bird (just one seen) perched on a small limb at the edge of the nest. As I approached it flew down to the water level, and proceeded to put on the "wounded act" and its wing tips and tail dragged in the water, and it gave a hurt call note, as it flew a short distance away. On the nest were two young doves, approximately 2/3 grown. They were both facing away from me, and when I came within 3 feet of the nest, they both took out of there as if they had been flying for years ! One flew across the pond and lit expertly in a clump of willows about 35 feet away. The other one flew over 50 feet before it lit in a tree. I would assume that this was their first flight from the nest, and it was surprisingly strong. Noone had to teach them to fly, from the looks of things. The nest cup, was piled full of clumps of feces, and they were in two more or less distinct piles, at that. Also saw many Pileolated and Yellow Warblers in the area around the pond.
