April 14, 1946 - Corvallis to Dixon Creek Ridge, and Return. 2 - 4 p.m. Wood Duck Turkey Vulture - saw a pair of them soaring over the fir groves, as if looking for a nesting sight. Red-tailed Hawk - one was "screaming" from what looked like a nest in a D. Fir. Sparrow Hawk - pair are nesting in tall snag beside Dixon Creek. Oregon Ruffed Grouse - flushed from beside the trail near Dixon Creek. Bob Whites ran across the road in front of me. Pheasants Killdeer W. Mourning Doves Rufous Hummingbird NW Flicker Pileated Woodpecker Olive-sided Flycatcher Violet-green Swallow Coast Jay Western Crow Oregon Chickadees Red-breasted Nuthatch - excavating nest cavity on underside of nearly horizontal limb of oak tree 30 feet above the ground. Limb faces east. Seattle Wren Winter Wren Western Robin Green-backed Goldfinch Oregon Towhee Oregon Junco W. Chipping Sparrow Dwarf Hermit Thrush W. Bluebird W. Ruby-crowned Kinglet Cassin's Vireo - first ones for the year. A udubon Warbler Eng. Sparrow W. Meadowlark Brewer Blackbird NW Redwing W. Evening Grosbeaks- in flocks Cal. Purple Finch N Pine Siskins Willow Goldfinch Puget Sound Sparrow Golden-crowned Sparrow Song Sparrow. April 15, 1946 - Corvallis, 10 a.m. Heard & saw my first one in a birch tree Yellow Warbler April 17, 1946 - Calapooya River, 3 p.m. Found a Cliff Swallow lying dead along the bank of the stream, and so far this year I have not even seen them flying around here ! Flushed a pair of Vesper Sparrows in a meadow near the river. April 18, 1946 - Dixon Creek, N of Corvallis, 3 p.m. Saw one flycatcher, genus Empidonax, but I wouldn't say which one. Found nest of Great Horned Owl. Apr. 19, 1946 - Nash Lake, Yaquina R., headwaters - Several Kingfishers, & one Cassin's Vireo. Apr. 20, 1946 - N. Fork Silver Creek headwaters. - Saw many Blue Grouse today. Apr. 21, 1946 - Woodburn - Audubon Warbler, Chipping Sp., Song Sp. & 2 sets of Robins were all busy nest building in our yard today.
