Meadowlark singing ambitiously 343 Nov. 7, 1944 - Mockingbird Canyon, to Arlington Cal - 7 to 930 a.m. San Diego Wren Audubon Warbler House Finch Black Phoebe (shy) W. Ruby-crown Kinglet Long-tail Jay in orange groves Cactus Wrens (quite a few) about 7" long, with deep harsh scolding notes. Blackish tail with which spotting, seen when in flight. Has a white stripe on the head. Black marking on throat and chest. Buffy spotting on underparts. The body is slightly speckled on the back. Old nests found near the birds, built in Deerhorn Cactus at height of 3-5', were made of grass and feathers and lined with feathers. One of the nests, entire, was gourd-shaped. The cup was about 4" deep and 3" wide. Opened to the east. Whether these nests belong to the wren, I am not too sure. Red-shafted Flicker White-crowned Sparrows Black-chinned Hummingbird Calif. Brown Towheeseemed quite bashful and would not fly but moved from bush to bush, on the ground. Costa's Hummingbirds were very common. The body was quite greenish, more somber on the female, and the female has a small light collar below the darker color of the head. Purple flared throat patch of the male, changed shades in different lights Also there is a purple patch on the top of the head. The tail is blackish.
