Jan. 18, 1944 - Walla Walla, Wash. 835 Whitman 0845 a.m. A sharp-shinned hawk lit in the top branches of a 50' tree and I watched him from our window, about 125' away. After a few moments, he made a swoopfor a Forsythia bush beneath our window, where 2 English Sparrows were perched. He scared them, but failed to get ehem. He just sat in the bush, and presently jumped lower and out came both sparrows and he in hot pursuit. Last part I saw! I wrote this to bring out the acute eye this hawk mustpossess to locate the Sparrows at that distance. Creeper, Rock Doves. Feb. 23, 1944 - Walla Walla City Park 4 p.m. Red-breasted Nuthatch, Flicker, Robin Pintail, Coot, Mallard, Baldpate, Wood Duck, Rocky Mtn. Creeper, Gold-crown Kinglet. Feb. 27, 1944 - Walla Walla to Whitman Monument and back noon - 4 p.m. Very windy. Temp. 40° Partly cloudy, with cirrostratus overcast. Flicker noticed several boldly giving what may be their first "love" calls. W.
