Sharp-shinned hawk flew to the ground under a lilac bush and stayed there a few seconds before flying up into the bus h. He was not after prey. Slaty gray below. Black Bill. Light ring around eye. Slender body. Black wings. Yellowish bars on wings. White outer tail feathers. Dark slate above. Ruby-crown Kinglet Sharp-shinned Hawk Kingfisher Cedar Waxwing Coot Pheasant * A pair of Cadwalls with the mallards and baldpates. Black under tail coverts white wing patch in flight. White belly. Chest and sides appeared grayish. Head had two brown shades to it. Took off directly into the air. ** Came upon a large covey of these quail M & F, and immatures feeding on the ground under Sumac and Creek Dogwood. As we approached, they started "Chucking" and jumped up into the bushes from the ground and then onto the low branches and limbs of the locust trees. Some of them went right up the trunk, vertically to higher branches. One of them came down from the higher limbs by going headfirst, straight down the trunk ! A surprise indeed ! Seeing is believing. The bark of the locust was of such character that this would be possible. Head dark brownish-grey with white eye patch, pointed to the rear. Wing tips white and white bar near back of folded wing. Head crested, pointed downward. Short, steep-sloped bill. High forehead. Broad tail, blunt. Breast brown; sides reddish brown and belly white.
