October 21, 1943 Woodburn, Oregon 8:30 a.m. home. This morning, while at the breakfast table, I heard a commotion outside in the back yard, I looked out just in time to see a Sharp-shinned Hawk fly away, carrying a full-grown robin in its talons. I could not tell if the robin was dead or alive. I went outside, but could not find any loose feathers, so evidently it was an instantaneous kill. The hawk with the robin was also seen by my wife and my folks. At Pudding River the same afternoon I saw Wood Ducks, Flickers, Bush Tits, and Oregon Chickadees. It was windy and raining steadily. October 27, 1943 Washougal, Washington 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Partly cloudy with high fog, altocumulus, and Cirrus. Strong east wind from up the river. We were 3 miles up the Columbia from Washougal on the river bottom area. Mallards in flocks on the sand bars. Green-winged Teal Baldpate American Pipits in large numbers Western Crows Kingfisher Black-bellied Plover About 150 Lesser Canadas going upriver. Several small flocks of Cackling Geese resting on the sandbars in the river and sloughs. My wife glanced down the river and saw a large flock of what we tooke to be sea gulls. About 5 minutes later they were close by and we both knew for sure that they were Lesser Snow Geese. There were 50 of them, and they were fly- ing wing-tip to wing-tip. The left flank went directly above us about 35' high. The Snow Geese winged steadily on up the river against the strong wind, for they were evidently heading for the Eastern Oregon Flyway. Later there were 4 more that came up the river alone. October 27, 1943, Camas, Washington, Palmer's Hill. Ruby-crowned Kinglet Audubon Warbler Junco Oregon Towhee Western Crow Cedar Waxwings Purple Finhh Winter Wren Western Gulls Bush Tits Robins Flicker Oregon Towhee Shoveller, 2 males flew low overhead. Harris Sparrows about 6 of them. Vesper/ China Pheasant hen Sharp-tailed Hawk ?
