May 16, 1942 Mary's Peak and enroute 8:30 to 1 p.m. with Bill Johnson. Cloudy and very wet. Robin English Sparrow Stellar Jay Meadowlark Long-tailed Jay Fufous Hummingbird-- saw one pair doing dive, saw one perched on wire that had the most brilliant re d throat and other plumage that I have ever seen. Blue Grouse -- Flushed several of them from along the road near the summit. Varied Thrush -- Seen in a noble fir tree nor th of the summit. Oregon Junco Western Evening Grosbeak -- Several fairly large flocks of them in the timber near the top. They chattered even in the rain storm. Flicker -- Gave usual call as it flew from the top of a fir tree. Hepburn's Rosy Finch -- Saw pair feeding on ground near the rocks on the steep south slope near the top of Mary's Peak. Observed by both of us at 15 feet through the field glasses. Head had light gray over crown and down the cheeks or sides of the head. One had more of this that the other. Both of the pair's bodies were a rich red brown, but I did not see any rose on the wings, as is supposed to be there. White-crowned Sparrow -- One pair of them in the lower branches of a Noble Fir. Chestnut-backed Chickadee -- A small flock of them in the same place. Yellow Warbler -- Saw one near the summit. Townsend's Solitaire -- Saw one pair of them feeding at the edge of the road on the way down. White tail feathers were plain but could not see white eye ring. Red-breasted Nuthatch -- Saw one and located nest in snag. Seattle Wren Oregon Chickadee Lutescent Warbler Winter Wren Chipping Sparrow Pacific Yellowthroat Bank Swallow Western Bluebird Turkey Vulture Willow Goldfinch Bob White Crow Pheasant 35 species. 15/1 May 19, 1942 -- Saw 1st Wsn. Tanager although they were reported 3 weeks or a month ago.
