April 25, 1942 12-mile Swamp south of Corvallis and Avery Park 8:30-12 noon Cold, rainy, clear, and warm, and windy again. Bill Johnson with me. English Sparrow Violet Green Swallow -- feeding on thick hatch of of small-size mosquitoes. Brewer Blackbird Weste n Meadowlark Chipping Sparrow Chipping Sparrow Western Crow -- Watched one of them doing some very intricate acrobatics. Bob White - Red-winged Blackbird -- I heard these birds giving so many different call notes today that I wouldn't attempt to learn or describe them. Wilson's Snipe Carrying nesting material to bushes Song Sparrow (different than Fusty Song Sparrow) in the swamp/. American Bittern -- About 7 of them in the swamp today. Their "rusty pump" call was in evidence. When approaching them. They remain still with their head high, and then squat down in the reeds and try to sneak away. Then they fly by taking off silently and with long powerful wing beats. They are not very awkward in flight. Lit silently. American Coot -- Several of them. They were traveling in airs. When frightened they take to their very awkward, drawn-out take-off. Mallard -- Lots of them flying around when scared off the swamp waters. Later in the morning I flushed a Mallard hen from a clump of reeds. She flew a few feet, touched the water and flew a little farther, lit, and then flew away at a low elevation. I looked for a nest and located it on a platform of floating dead twigs and stems in the reeds. The nest was lined with down feathers. There were 9 eggs layed in three compact rows. They were a light rich buff color about 2" long and an inch or 1[illegible]" wide. Not pointed at the ends. More oval. Tule Wren -- Perched in small ash tree singing. Killdeer Great Blue Heron -- Saw it flying northward over the swamp. Barn Swallow -- Flying with Violet-greens over the swamp. Forked tail was very easily noticeable. Green-wing Teal -- Floci of 5 flew in over us and lit on the open water. Wood Ducks -- A pair on the swamp and 2 pairs on the Mary's River. White on side of head of female was very plain. Virginia Rail -- Brown-red sides with white bars were plain and it flew awkwardly for a short distance in front of us. Pacific Yellowthroat Greater Yellow-legs -- Had a click, click call in flight. Tail appeared rather long in comparison to side view of Snipe in flight. Looked a lot like Mourning Dove except for the long bill. Had long smooth wing beats. White rump above tail. Rather long wings. Several of them in the area. When they wanted to light, they didn't circle very much, but went into a dive (like a Nighthawk) instead. Western Red-tailed Hawk.-- Flew over the swamp and was driven away by redwings. Sora Rail -- (Notes taken in the field). Yellow bill, buff colr with brownish inges to it. There was whitish under the tail or rump. It gave a plaintiff whistle that was not too far from being human. It was about 8" long and at the time I saw it, it was walking on water cress ?? and feeding inthe water. At this point the water was about 18" de ep. Turkey Vulture -- 3 of them soaring over the swamp. Bank Swallow -- Feeding on large swarm of small-size mosquitoes over the swamp. Brownish band across the chest could be seen plainly. Robin-- Audubon Warbler -- Lots of them in the trees in Avery Park. Saw one female picking cobwebs from between two branches of a snag. It also picked up some moss branches.
