Golden-crowned Sparrow -- Gave their mournful call notes. Long-tailed Jay. California Purple Finch -- Singing from the very top branch of a fir tree. Red-breasted Nuthatch -- I heard some heavy drilling as of a woodpecker and upon investigation found a pair of these birds in an oak tree; one of them was hanging from the underside of a sloping limb on the southwest side of the tree. It was boring a nest, the size of which was about 1" in diameter or a little larger, and it was drilled to a depth of 2 or 3 inches. I approached the working bird within five feet. A large flock of them. At the same time I saw two Black-throated Gray Warblers -- The first I have seen this year. The plumage on one of them showed brilliantly. Black patches on the breast, bord red by white. Wings seemed to be almost a "Nuthatch" blue gray color. April 20, 1942 Corvallis, Or. 140 Studied Red-breasted Nuthatch nest referred to Saturday. Hole diameter is about 1 1/4" going straight back and turning down and to the right. It is a little wider in the lower part. There was shredded bark in the bottom of the cavity. The Cliff Swallows have returned to the eaves of Bell Field and the Horse barn near the greenhouses. Lots of them were seen flying around the eaves.
