Full plumage. Sparrow Hawk -- Saw one swoop down off wire line and grab small mouse near road. Great Blue Heron -- In drainage ditch just south of Monmouth about 150 feet away. March 7, 1942 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Pudding River and Belle Passe. Robin Flicker Oregon Towhee-- Many of them were singing in the upper branches of trees. Oregon Chickadee California Creeper -- First I've seen for some time. Belly very white. It was working the trunk of a D. Fir. Uttered high notes occasionally. Bush Tit -- Many of them working there way through the trees and bushes. Rusty Song Sparrow. 11 Mallards -- scared them up off the river just above the swimming hole. Red-breasted Nuthatch -- Several of these in a flock. Slender-billed Nuthatch -- saw one pair working in an Ash tree. Winter Wren-- Coast Jay-- 2 of them scolding me Audubon Warbler Western Meadowlark Western Bluebirds -- Males were in brilliant plumage and there were small flocks of them along the country roads in the bushes along the fence rows and on the wires and fence posts. Brewer Blackbird Oregon Junco English Sparrow Redwing Blackbird. Western Red-tailed Hawk Wilson Snipe -- Saw one squat in pond in wheat field so I stopped the car and backed up directly opposite him, about 15 feet away. Watched him stay motionless for 5 minutes then whistled etc at him and it did not affect him at all. Finally threw rock near him to scare him. Green-winged Teal -- Some in with Mallards on large pond near Fitzpatrick's. Sparrow Hawk Western Crow American Pipit -- 4 or 5 of them in a stubble field. Killdeer. 26 species.
