One squawking with voice similar to a heron's. Turkey Vulture--One heading south. Oregon Chickadee--Several in the hazel brush Rusty Song Sparrow-- Cedar Waxwing--Still are several small bands wandering over the countryside Flicker-- Bush Tit--One pair with a pretty song. They weren't feeding, just singing. It was a very delicate song. Oregon Ruffed Grouse--First I've seen in a long time. Near Payzants chicken house. Western Meadowlark--Several singing in the fields and on light wires. Brewer's Blackbird--Saw only one large flock today. English Sparrows--In road and woods feeding on the weeds. Valley Quail--Two parents with a covey of nine young ones crossing the road. 14 species. September 21, 1941 Pudding River and McKee. 8-10A.M. Weather perfect Killdeer--They seem to be banding together now. Brewer Blackbird s--small bands of them. Robin-- English Sparrow-- Meadowlark--Several of them chasing each other, doing wing-overs, dives, climbs, etc. Song Sparrow Oregon Towhee-- Slender-billed Nuthatch--working a fir tree. Oregon Chickadee--feeding on branch tips of a fir tree with Red-breasted Nuthatches--several of them continually chattering and flitting from one tip to another. Golden-crowned Kinglet-- Stellar Jay Bush Tit-- Flicker-- Gairdner Woodpecker--In ash tree. Cassin Vireo--Singing from the top of a small fir. Fox Sparrow--In the underbrush. Seattle Wren--Scolded me but later heard one singing. Red-breasted Sapsucker--Six of them were chasing each other from a tall snag to a fir tree and back to the snag. Great variation in notes given. Two appeared to be larger than the others. Maybe the parents of the other four sapsuckers. Kingfisher--Flew downstream. Winter Wren--Perched in vine maple in deep woods singing a light high-pitched song. Violet-green Swallow--A small flock of them flew overhead. Willow Goldfinch--Flushed from a thistle patch. Harris Woodpecker--Working a yew tree trunk. Cooper's Hawk--In a clearing in the woods. It was giving raspy squeeks as it flew overhead. Redwing Blackbirds--A flock gathered together in a tree across from P. Seely in swamp. Western Bluebird-- Several along the road. Vaux Swift--One single in with a flock of VG Swallows. Sparrow Hawk--Reddish back shows up very well. Turkey Vulture-- Mourning Dove--Pair of them on a light wire. 31 species.
