August 5, 1941 Payzants Woods and home. Just a little warm, no clouds, slight breeze. 2 - 4 P.M. English Sparrow-- Brewer Blackbird Robin Cassin Vireo-- Several in the Ash tree thickets feeding and singing Western Bluebird--Perched on a telephone wire Western Tanager--Saw 3 females but didn't see any males. Oregon Chickadee--Feeding in an oak clump Little Flycatcher--There seemed to be many of them in the woods today. Pacific Yellowthroat--Heard the whichitee but did not see them. Black-throated Gray Warbler--Feeding in the oak trees. I watched him for five minutes and during that time he did not give one call note. Seattle Wren--Several individuals scolded me as I walked thru the woods. Slender-billed Nuthatch--There was an unusual number of them in the woods today. Cedar Waxwing--One fairly large flock moved by me as it worked thru the woods. Western Red-tailed Hawk--Perched in tall fir and giving screaming cry call. Flicker-- Black-headed Grosbeak--Was chased by two Cedar Waxwings. Coast Bush Tit--Quietly perched in some dense underbrush Arkansas Kingbird-- Perched atop a tall snag in the woods. Its bright yellow belly showed up very well. It has a strong irregular crooked flight. Shufeldt's Junco-- Valley Quail--Out in stump land. Rusty Song Sparrow-- Russet-backed Thrush--Called to a young one for five minutd and worked him within 5 or 6 feet of me. Also one in laurel near my window tonight. Coast Jay-- Fox Sparrow--In the underbrush Oregon Towhee-- Scratching in the underbrush Mourning Dove-- Flew overhead. Lewis Woodpecker--About a dozen of them in the snag patch near Eldon's. They chased each other when after food. They would sally out for bugs and return to the same perch. Same chuckering as in the spring was given in call Sharp-shinned Hawk--Perched on snag in woods clearing. Western Wood Pewee--Perched on small bush giving call note Audubon Warbler-- In weed patch near the farm house. Macgillvary Warbler--In woods near Pudding River Red-breasted Sapsucker--Two large birds and a young one near Pudding River. Lutescent Warbler--Gave call and flew from Ash tree by Pudding River. Willow Goldfinch--perched on wire near highway. Yellow Warbler--In walnut trees at home. Western House Wren--In back yard scolding Hudsy. There was not a violet-green swallow seen today at all. Vaux Swift--8 of them in sky overhead this evening. Mallard Duck--28 of them flew SE over here this evening. Killdeer--Flew over the house tonight. 39 species seen Sept. 12, 1941 Woodburn Rainy, Windy, Cool, & Sunny 3 P.M. - 4:30 P.M. Seen flying over our back yard Barn Swallow(1) Vaux Swifts (6) Kingfisher (1) Flicker (1) Cedar Waxwing (3) English Sparrow (2) There has been a decided absence of birds of almost all species during the past 2 weeks.
