At 12-mile swamp May 24, 1941 9-11 a.m. Weather perfect. Rusty Song Sparrow Streaked Horned Lark--On fence post by the road Chipping Sparrow--Several on wires, posts, and along fence rows. Western Robin-- Cedar Waxwing--One pair in ash trees along Mary's River just above bridge. Red-wing Blackbird--Many of them at swamp. Took pictures of three nests, two with 3 eggs in each, 1 with a young in it. Eggs bluish with reddish-brown spots, stripes, etc. Brewer Blackbird-- Western Meadowlark-- Buzzard-- American Bittern--Two of them at the same time--their head and neck straight up in the rushes etc. Later heard their call and it certainly sounds just like a rusty pump. Mallard--lots of them. Red-tailed Hawk--Circling low over the swamp. Virginia Rail--Female we scared off the nest to take a picture of the 8 light buff, with spots and lines of brownish eggs. nest 10" off water height. Killdeer--This pair seemed to have eggs laid in the gravel along the road but we could not find them. Sparrow Hawk Barn Swallow Mourning Dove Anthony Green Heron--In marsh beside the road, it flew quitey to an ash tree The red under tail was clearly discernable and also the gray-blue on back and wings showed up well. Cassin Vireo Yellow Warbler Pacific Yellowthroat Crow Coot--Swimming in water brush, let out coarse cry and then flew. China Pheasant-- Shoveler--bird size of pintail duck with black head and neck, white chest, white shoulders, rust-red along rear side of body, Gray and white on wings and tail. In flight the outer part of the tail is white, and white patches on the wing show. A t Newport on May 25, 1941 Weather clear warm and very windy in late p.m. Robin, Violet-green Swallow, Barn Swallow, Willow Goldfinch, Cliff Swallow, Western Gull, Crow, Brewer Blackbird, Valley Quail--several flocks along the road over. Bob White, Killdeer, Yellow Warbler, China Pheasant Glaucaus Gull Red-throat Loon--Swimming near buoy just down-bay from Yaquina. Lesser Scaup-flock flew over while we were clamming at the same place. Tree Swallow, Blue Heron, Rusty Song Sparrow, Russet-back Thrush, Ruby-crown Kinglet. Holboel Grebe--Swimming the surface of the bay near Wyatt. Surf Scoter, White Winged Scoter, Bald Eagle--Very large, shiny white head, and white on upper tail. First I had ever seen. At Wyatt. Flew up the bay and then started gaining altitude very rapidly. Corvallis, Weather clear, cool, moon 1/2 full etc. June 1, 1941 8:30 P.M. I heard the 1st Nighthawk of the year high overhead in the twilight. It was circling and giving its rasping call at 20-3 second intervals.
