May 18, 1941 Swamp 12 miles south of Corvallis. Weather--practically a cloudburst. Robin-- Brewer Blackbird-- Pacific Yellowthroat--In fence row from highway to swamp. Whichitee-whichitee call. Western Meadowlark-- Killdeer-- Northwestern Redwing Blackbird--Found nest near road between two bridges in which there were 3 eggs greenish-blue, spotted and irregularly striped a reddish brown. Nest in reeds and about 4" across. China Pheasant-- Oregon Vesper Sparrow-- Bob White Quail--first I've seen for a long time. They ran ahead of us in the road. Mallard Duck--2 hens and drake. Nest with 6 eggs in it in middle of swamp. Pintail Duck--One male in brilliant plumage. White up side of neck etc. Barn Swallow--Deeply forked tail Great Blue Heron-- Northern Phalarope--Jitterbugs--one way and then another while they were swimming. Whitish underneath, gray or brown above, with reddish patches on side or back of neck. American Bittern--Call was distinctive--like rusty pump. Bank Swallow--5 of them perched on a dead twig over the water of the swamp. Tule Wren--Sharp rasping trill with high notes at end. Virginia Rail--Nest in rushes within 10 feet of road. 9 eggs dirty buff, dark speckled. Another nest with 4 young and 8 eggs near east side. Rusty Song Sparrow-- Violet-green Swallow-- Russet-backed Thrush--Sitting in ash tree. Spotted underneath. Cassin Vireo-- Yellow Warbler-- Wood Pewee-- In ash grow, single high delicate note. Oregon Towhee-- Crow-- Mourning Dove-- Traill Flycatcher--pale wing bars, whitish eye-ring and slight yellow on belly. Buzzard-- Willow Goldfinch Wood Duck-- Cliff Swallow-- House Finch-- Pine Siskin-- Western Evening Grosbeak-- Red-shafted Flicker--
