Route: To Dufur via Wapinitia Cutoff and then south to Madras and Culver, then west into Deschutes and Squaw Creek Canyon to Camp Sherman, then to Suttle Lake, into snow storm with 6" at Hoodoo summit. South Santiam pass to Corvallis. Say Phoebe--seen at dusk behind the Dufur high school. Reddish below Mountain Bluebird--On wire near Say Phoebe. White below and long-winged. Black-billed Magpie--On Wapinitia Cutoff near flat country. I have one "HUOSY" Western Robin--In a grain field Brewer Blackbird--lots of them Dusky Horned Lark--on fence posts along road near Maupin Western Crow--Many flying above the rimrock and across the plains Eastern Sparrow Hawk--many of them hovering over fields and plains Bullock Oriole--In Dufur and near Tye Ridge Summit in trees. Male. Western Tanager--In valley near Tygh Oregon Western Kingbird--Yellow below, Gray above, Red crest, white on outer tail, not tipped English Sparrow--around some of the barms white Western Meadowlark--On the rails, fences, posts, and wires singing Violet-green Swallow--Many of them near civilization Lark Sparrow--In the sage along the road, near Madras Columbian Sharp-tailed Grouse--female, in ditch in flat country near Maupin Killdeer-- Around green and cultivated lands. Western Bluebird--Around civilization on fences etc. House Finch--On fence near Tygh Valley Savannah Sparrow--Along fence row by White River--yellowish with brown Raven--Many of them around the rim rock; tail is pointed when spread. Lazuli Bunting--Light blue, reddish-brown and white below. Song like MacGillivary Warb. Rock Wren--White line above the eye, but much lighted in color than Seattle Wren N. S. Flicker--Flew from oak tree near road Pileolated Warbler--In poplar trees along White River Golden Eagle--Female flew from nest in Yellow Pine tree in Tygh Canyon Western Red-tail Hawk--Watch a pair in 'romance' flight about 10 minutes. Vaux Swift--Many overhead near Tygh Valley. Very swift in flight. Long-tailed Chat--Had a good look at same place. Great variety of tones and calls. Rough-winged Swallow--No conspicuous throat ring. Shaggy brown above Wood Pewee--several in trees near Madras--single high note. Nevada Red-wing--Many in swamp near Madras Chipping Sparrow--In trees near Tygh Valley Dipper--Found nest 1/2 mile above last cabin on White River at bend in river. Spotted Sandpiper--On the sandbar about 50 feet from dipper nest. Also on Metolius. Turkey Buzzard--Many of them over the country-side Merrill's Song Sparrow--A variety of the Willamette Valley Rusty Song Sparrow. Cliff Swallow--On the wing near dry cliffs and banks at Madras Luck Hawk--On a fence post out of Maupin--distinct black falcon marks showed White-rumped Shrike--Many of them on flats west of Culver, west of Squaw Cr. Canyon Swainson Hawk--One in flight near highway and one on phone pole too. White chin patch. Valley Quail--On post in sage brush country. A look out. Near Madras Ash-throated Flycatcher--In sagebrush in Cow Canyon and also near Madras Northern Flicker--In Cow Canyon--lighter yellow under the wings etc. Prairie Falcon--Above rimrock and also flying low over sagebrush. 2X as Sparrow Hawk Brewer Sparrow--Sounded like Chippy but faster, sharper and ending in a trill Harris Woodpecker--In forest east of Camp Sherman 10 miles. Two of them were nesting Oregon Chickadee-- Same place as Harris Woodpecker Shufeldt Junco--Some in the pine forests east of Camp Sherman Slender-billed Nuthatch--There also. Those underlined are new to me.
