May 10, 1941 6 - 8:30 A.M. Weather perfect. SWAMP SOUTH OF CORVALLIS - 12 MILES Sharp-shinned Hawk---perched on a southwest cornice of the Home Ec Building. M Robin----On nest at SW corner of Ag Bldg. and feeding in open plowed field. F Pine Siskin--Feeding in the elm trees M & F Meadowlark--Perched on a fence post singing. M & F Rusty Song Sparrow--In lilac bush by Snell Hall singing. M Western Evening Grosbeak--Feeding on elm samara on the ground. M & F Chipping Sparrow--probing leaves of elm tree by Home Ec Bldg. M Violet-green Swallow--Everywhere flying and perched. Warbling Vireo--In maple tree at corner of Jameson House, feeding in leaves. M Horned Lark (Streaked)--On fence posts on highway to swamp. Willow Goldfinch--Hopping around in tree behind hunter's shack. Western Bluebird--Perched on light wire on Highway Brewer Blackbird--M & F F carrying worms in bill, but would not go near nest. Lewis Woodpecker--Flew up from plowed field where it was feeding M in full plumage. Northwestern Redwing--M & F There are 100's of them. at the swamp. They extend their Bob White--Feeding in wheat field near the road. red patches separately. Mallard--M & F Several flocks of them and also one flock of 12-15 young. Great Blue Heron--Flew north over marsh as we got out of car. Flew very low. Pintail--Took off as we got out of car. White sides, long neck and tail. Wood Duck--Saw several pairs of them swimming in the waters of the marsh. Coot--saw just one solitary coot swimming in the water and among the reeds. Barn Swallow--M & F perched on wire--good coloring--deeply forked tail in flight. Yellow-headed Blackbird--One solitary in reeds quite far out in water. Golden head and shoulders, and breast showed up plainly. Later a M flew over us at about 20 feet distance. Had white patch on fore margin of wings. Killdeer--scared them up from swamp in middle of grain field. Flew overhead. Raven--One on fence post on way home on highway. Brewers were around it--pestering. Oregon Chickadee--Working bark and lichens on oak tree. California Yellow Warbler--Saw several pairs in the ash tree clumps and heard their song. Western Tanager--Saw M & F. First I had seen this year. They are beautiful! Western Crow--Flushed female off nest in ash tree on the border of the swamp. Pacific Yellowthroat--First for me this year. M & F. In ash tree and in fence row. Turkey Buzzard--One soared over us. Sparrow Hawk--One hovered over a field and them flew to top of ash tree. Marsh Hawk--Long wings, long tail, whitish underneath. Very high over marsh. Virginia Rail--First I have ever seen. Reddish yellow beak 1 1/2 -2" long. Top of body brown flecked. Under a rich red or chestnut brown. Black and white bars on under side of belly and tail. Long legs, won't fly very far. Easy to flush China Pheasant--lots of them in the fields California Valley Quail--In the woods, I saw the look out. Oregon Towhee--Saw one male scratching in the leaves in the underbrush. Long-tail Jay--One perched in Ash tree beside the road Harris Woodpecker--Working the bark on the trunk of a Douglas Fir. Flicker--perched in the top of a young fir tree calling out CLIFF SWALLOW NEST UNDER BARN EAVE WEST OF GREENHOUSES 5/13/41
