February 22, 1941 2 P.M. to 5 P.M. Trip with Corvallis Bird Club, in Elmo Stevenson's Car. We went through the country east of the town of Corvallis. Circled clear over to the Albany - Eugene highway. Weather rather hazy with some clouds. Birds Seen: Flicker Golden-crown Kinglet Brewer Blackbird Valley Quail Meadowlark 2.Pied-Bill Grebe Killdeer Oregon Chickadee Audubon Warbler Robin 1.Long Tail Jay (Calif.) Oregon Towhee Slender-bill Nuthatch Rusty Song Sparrow Red-tail Hawk Ruby-crown Kinglet 4.Horned Lark 7.Coot Sparrow Hawk 5.Burrowing Owl Mallard Junco 6.N.W. Redwing Wilson Snipe China Pheasant Western Bluebird 8.Marsh Hawk 3.Pipit English Sparrow 9.Amer. Rough Leg or Young Golden Eagle Mourning Dove North. Red-breast Sapsucker Seattle Wren Western Evening Grosbeak 10Golden Crown Sparrow. 11White Crown Sparrow 12Green-back Goldfinch 1. The first I had seen this year. We saw five of them altogether. 2. This Grebe was on small lake near highway east of Willamette River going to Albany. It would dive for 2 minutes or better, it seemed. 3. There were lots of Pipits in the green fields--the first I have ever seen. 4. Horned Lark, I didn't see, but Prof. Gorden saw them 5. This Burrowing Owl was in a moldy hay stack in a field. Gordon went around it and flushed it toward us. 6. First N.W. Redwings of the year. They were with Brewer's Black- birds one time, and I saw others alone. 7. First coot I have ever seen on a river. All black. White on head. 8. Flying lazyily and low along the course of a slough that ran through a pas ture. White underneath. Fairly large. 9. Saw this bird sitting on a low tree near the road. It was a great deal larger that the Red-Tail Hawk. General brown color with a grayish patch on upper base of tail. It must have had a wing-spread of five feet. When on the set, I noticed that it looked like it had an eagle's shaped head. 10. & 11. The Golden Crown and the White Crown Sparrows were all together in one fence row that we came to. The young were a rich brown with speckled baek. 12. First Green-back Goldfinch since the first of the year.
