Engels 1935. Vicinity of Sacramento Sacramento County, California. Yolo Co., Calif. May 8, 1935. Left Berkeley with C.R. Sprinkle at 10: o'clock this morning. First stop, for gophers, was west 1 mi., south 1/2 mi., south of Elk Grove Crossroad, which is 13 mi. south of Sacramento. In an alfalfa field here I set out 1 trap. Workings were very hard to see because they were hidden by the rank vegetation. 1/4 mi. north of Elk Grove Crossroad (12 3/4 mi. S. Sacramento) I made another set on a bank by a culvert. A third set put out 12 miles south of Sacramento in a field by the road. x' (orchard) x Upper Stockton Road x x 13 mi. S. Sacramento cemetery Fourth set made in roadside ditch about 1 mi. north of last (about 11 mi. S Sacramento). Sprinkle set out 6 traps to my four, in approximately same localities. We drove on into Sacramento & took U.S. Highway 99 W out of town (toward Davis). We looked for signs of pocket gophers all along this road, driving slowly, and getting out & walking twice, up to the Yolo Causeway (Yolo County).
