Sand: Johnston Feb 15 below (3) the frigate colony. We did not disturb it but it left later and did not return. Five Tropic birds on eggs discovered on Johnston; with 8 hovering at the same time, at least 13 there; probably 3 more nests somewhere. No tagged birds on J.I. Banded 900 Fotte's 9:00 - 12:00. Two new Christmas Islands found on NW slope near pipeo; one recovery, one unbanded. Feb 16 Took the day off and journeyed out on the raft in the afternoon. Halfway to the reef the motor quit for good. We were ignominiously towed in by the picket boat. Saw very few fish to boot, though some nice red snappers were opened. A young male frigate (white head and breast but with inflated pouch) was making passes at every female around. Sitting on one of the stanchions, he would spread his wings, shake his head from side to side, and whistle at any frigate which passed overhead. This would begin when the approaching bird was 50 yards away and at heights of 200'. Many landed, evidently
