K. Amerman 1764 Mariana Atoll, Gilbert Islands We spent two hours combing the flats Nov 15 after tying the raft to a rusted scrap and stumbling in to the beach and collected only 4 Godwits, of two bill lengths but apparently the same species, and 1-2 curlews. Then we returned to the pier, picked up several crew members and Dave and headed out. The ship departed the atoll a little after noon for Mariana. The at-sea watch produced several storm-petrels for the first time. Most had broad white rump patches extending into half the tail and fluffy white bars; A few were solid black. Nov 16 Saw only terns as we approached Mariana Atoll early in the morning, most of them in a large flock. As we neared the reef a small vessel passed across our bow. We learned later that it was the John Williams, English colony boat on its monthly (?) supply trip. It brings in a school supply and probably goods for stores. Richard at 9 AM, set out in the raft about 10 (Crew title). Mr. Harding (new 2nd mate) went with us. We made two attempts at the small boat
