Mariana Atoll, Gilbert Islands
We spent two hours combing the flats
Nov 15 after tying the raft to a rusted scrap
and stumbling in to the beach and collected
only 4 Godwits, of two bill lengths but
apparently the same species, and 1-2 curlews.
Then we returned to the pier, picked
up several crew members and Dave and
headed out. The ship departed the
atoll a little after noon for Mariana.
The at-sea watch produced several
storm-petrels for the first time. Most
had broad white rump patches extending
into half the tail and fluffy white bars;

Mariana Atoll early in the morning, most
of them in a large flock.

made two attempts at the small boat
