Debut to Makin
Except for a few interesting shecruwater-
petrels very few birds were around
after we left the atoll.
Friday
Nov. 13. Arrived at Makin Atoll about
noon. While watching natives headed
for the ship in their canoes I discovered
George below by the lat comental
dumbfounded by a clam he had picked
up on deck which promptly closed on
his finger - he thought it was dead.
Ben Brown extricated him while
everyone chuckled at the ridiculous
but painful scene.
While Binion talked to the native
Magistrate, Police Chief & doctor who
[illegible] come aboard we got gear ready.
We had [illegible] decided to try using
the ship motorized whaleboat since
we were low on gas. It was lowered
in the water to the sound of much
creaking and squealing. Immediately,
water began running toward the
back. Mrs. Ashtor asked MacPherson
if it was leaking and he said the
water was merely draining from the
bow. As the boat continued to settle
in the water he reconsidered his
