Taka to Jemo
Returned to the ship by 0730, underway
by 0830 and out of the atoll by 0930.
Arrived off Jemo Island late in the
afternoon, ate aboard and then left
for the island prepared to spend the night.
Set out rat traps. Brian set up his insect
light. Rogers Larry walked the shore before
dark looking for skerhids. After dark
we all walked around the edge of
the vegetation. Saw 3 Red-foots, 2 Brown,
a few Fairy Terns on the outside and
many in the interior. Birds impossibly
high. Larry found a Turtile, the first
we have seen live ashore at night.
They are as ponderous and somehow
magnificent in life as on film. To
sed about 830 under an open tuncifed
skeller over which we spread a tent
fly. Brian, Larry, George Phil tried
Sleeping on the beach to avoid the
mosquitoes & rats but came occurring
back about 10 in the middle of a
Shower. Another, heavier, one came along
around 3 in the morning, The ships
couring some discomfort.
Oct 2ff Up about 620, collected a few
plants we hadn't seen before, left Jemo
715, underway around 815.
