Engler 1936 Rock Cr., 5000 ft., Granite Mt., Washoe Co., Nev. July 12. On the way up a rattlesnake struck, and crawled towards me from a small ledge. It gave no warning. My next step would probably have landed on the snake if it had not moved as I did not see it till it struck. I shot at it as it was crawling thru a bush and going through the branches and blew the top of its head and part of its back away. A while resting on the top of the hill at the place I was going to set the traps, a wood rat N. lepidota climbed up on one about 5 ft from me but ran back immediately. This was about 3:00 P.M. I looked among the rocks for it, and found some feces of a porcupine. After setting six rat traps among the rocks I descended the hill to the stream and set out a line of 26 mouse traps within a distance of 75 ft of the water. Some were near the water and others were among rocks on the hill. They were set about 50 to 100 ft. apart. July 13. On the morning of the 12th took from the traps the following.
