Engler 1936 Smoke Cr., 3900 ft, 7 mi E Calgeline, Washoe Co., Nev. July 8. narrow rockwalled canyon thru which the stream flowed. The bats were flying low as they flew up the road, often passing within two feet of us. July 9 Yesterday morning was spent in preparing the rabbit & bat specimens taken the night before. After lunch after lunch I went out to collect some birds. It was cloudy & quite a sting wind was blowing. No birds could be seen in the open except a few cliff swallows. Some bird notes were heard in the cottonwoods along the Cr. & two Arkansas kingbirds were taken there. Song sparrows were also heard occasionally. A Red tailed hawk was seen perched in the leafless, topmost branches of a tall cottonwood. A small bird, unidentified was busy hopping about the smaller branches around the hawk drawing attention to the spot with its calls. When I approached the hawk flew. Returning to the cabin 5 vultures were seen wheeling about over the sagebrush about 100 to 150 ft high.
