Engler 1936 1/2 mi. NW Flanigan, 4200 ft., Washoe Co., Nev. July 6 cont fore had many cracks & crevices which offered excellent shelter to those animals living in such places. South of camp (+ Flanigan) across the dry flats an occasional farm could be found with water + green grass around it. The rocky hills here were more abrupt & seemed to offer some protection from the daily winds which blew across the flats. As a result more birds could be seen flying about during the day. Redwinged + Brewers blackbirds, Dove, Quail, Sandpipers, Barn + Cliff swallows, Ash Throated Flycatches, Song Sparrows, Linnets, Redtailed + Swainson Hawks + Prairie Falcons were seen. Very few gopher workings could be found. The rabbits were thick. The heat of the day was somewhat abated by the winds that generally blew from the west. This wind would begin about 9:00 A.M. + blow steadily till early evening. The mornings + evenings as cool with no appreciable wind. It was only at these times that bird life was seen at camp. Even then the birds kept close to the ground.
