May 4 1954 Barun Valley 3 mi S.W. of Makalu, elen 15,500 ft. Nepal. A line of 16 traps: 9 mus.specs, 6 nut, & 1 #7 steel was set behind camp overnight; about half of them alongside or near the tents on a flat low-grassy (just becoming green) area and the others (mostly rat traps) among the rocks of the talus above. Camp is on a flat morainal ledge 50 ft above the Barun River Valley bottom. The river is about 1/2 mile away. The talus slope (S-facing) above camp is about 50 yds. but 200 yds & is composed of light colored angular granite blocks ranging in size from tiny to house-size. The slope is 20°-30°. Considerable 3/16" chasm dropping, some fresh bone been observed under the rocks & several Pikas have been seen previously. Also for the past 2 nights a mouse has entered the main tent. The steel traps was baited with dried carcass, the other traps with walnut meat. Two voles were caught overnight; one in a small trap near a tent, the other in a rat- trap in a grassy spot among the talus blocks. 93, 94 (W.W.D. 93, 94.) 8:30 A.M. A sparrow-like bird is shot from the group of common red-breasted Camp birds (W.W.D. 62, 66) but this specimen is later discarded because of spoilage.
