April 29 1954 Broom Valley, Jan 12, 6:00 A.M., N.P. All traps taken in 6:00 A.M. this morning. A vole is caught in one of the meadow traps across a runway; this trap had previously (2 days ago) caught a vole (W.W.D. 89). See species account for more complete vole notes. From a rat trap placed inside a cave (see Apr 21 for description) a logomorph (Ochotoma?) is caught. This is where the numerous spherical droppings, 3/16" diam have been observed! (W.W.D. 90) 7:00 A.M. From a flock of at least 4 finches active in the dry chaparral near the stream a mole is shot (W.W.D. 91). Morning is spent putting up the 3 specimens. As we are about to leave, 11:25 A.M., a Limnagazer Limnagazer flies 60 ft over camp - the first of these seen down this low. 69 Pipits (W.W.P. 69) abound on the open slopes above timber line. There is much tail wagging by the birds as they scout over the ground. When a bird takes to the air it invariably utters a single whistled note. These birds act much like the American Pipits.
