April 23 1954 88 Barren Valley elev 12,600 ft Mescal. Morning clear & frosty (estimate overnight minimum about 27 F). One vole caught overnight in a meadow trap; no other traps springing. The linct has been taken from the steel trap; it will be set again tonight. I spend an hour in the fir-Rhododendron forest & along the banks of the Barren River but no birds are seen except those which have already been taken: Creepers fairly common in the firs; Chickadees & the tiny tit-like bird (W.W.D 76.) very common & usually seem to get her. The joy-like birds (W.W.D 80-81) frequently heard & one seen. A pair of Choughs flying high overhead. No mammal or sign observed. Spend the morning hunting in the firs, chopped & open slopes; however no new birds seen in these habitats. Just below the granite cliffs where a stream cuts through a talus slope, two birds are observed, the same sp. which have been frequently seen around streams in the lower Barren Valley & also along the Arun River. These are the birds whose stream habits, dipping, flying low over the water etc. seem similar to the Water Ouzel (W.W.D 26). One bird is shot; the other flies away.
