"McDermott Journal Mar. 23 1954 Arun River Valley Bottom, 1 mi W of Nume, elev 3000ft Nepal. The Arun valley here is a 4,000ft deep, V-shaped canyon densely forested with broad leaf trees & brush on either side. There are several small tributary stream gullies in the area. The river bed is narrow & rocky here. A conical sized bird is seen flitting about from boulder to boulder (W.W.D. 53). As it lights on a large rock there is much flickering of the red-tailed tail. This bird avoids vegetation as I follow it up a stream gully - finally it is shut. Several others of these birds are noticed among the stream bordes this afternoon. Another larger red- tailed bird is seen in the same habitat of the former - acting much the same, although this one is more wary of my presence & there is less tail flickering & general activity. This bird is also shut. Time 2:00 PM. (W.W.D. 54) & Three trap lines [illegible] (15 mm. spec. & rat traps, 13 mm. spec.) are set. See Mar. 24.
