medamnie 1954 April 19 Notes from above 16,000 ft. Comp I, E side of Barun Valley, elev 16,500 ft., 2 mi S. of Maholm, Nepal. This camp is situated 100 ft. from a 250 ft. diameter unfrozen lobe. A glacier terminates in an icefall just above the lake, which lies in a bench on a 30-40° granite slope, partly talus. There is little vegetation apparent here. Short junipers or low rhododendrons about 800 ft. below. At this date there is no evidence of animal life except for old brown chitter daggings; however, I am only here for 2 hours. April 27 A solitary sandpiper is working at the edge of the lobe, apparently little disturbed by our presence 50 ft. away, 10:05 A.M. The bird resembles the Spotted Sandpiper in size (slightly larger, perhaps) and also in general pattern except that the feet are bright red and there is a red marring on the lower mandible. As the bird flies giving a sharp rapid whistled note, a white stripe running the length of under the wing is visible. The bird teeters continuously as it moves slowly about the water's edge, apparently searching for insects; several have been seen floating (dead?) in the lobe. The bird is still on the lobe as we leave this site 12:05 P.M.
