W.B. Davis 1936. Snake River Bridge, Ontario, Malheur Co., Oregon. May 27 Last night - about 8 P.M. - I set out 40 mouse traps on the east Idaho- tank of the river. Had them set in a marshy area where water seeps from the irrigated land back into the river, and in semi-sandy areas covered sparsely with Artemisia & duthu Sarcobatus, Grayia, & Chrysothamnus. In the marshy area nettles, willows, water cress, roses, currants, etc were forming a semi-thicket. Caught nothing but snails. Had 30 of them piled up on one trap. The bait was gone from all the traps in the marshy areas. Pequeguat set in the Artemisia on this side of the river and could catch nothing but 2 toads, etc. catched 2 young gophers today and 4 yesterday. These are the big Thomomys townsendi. They are fairly common here and cause the farmers a great deal of damage, especially in the way of interrupting irrigator activities. We left this camp about 1:30 headed for Hornedale, Owyhee Co., Idaho.
