W.B.Davis 1936. Bellevue, Blaine Co., Idaho, Jan. 17, this act is a God send to legitimate sheep men because it will prevent the great speculation in sheep that has taken place in this region in the past. Mr. Head maintains that the legitimate sheep men are not destroying the range, but rather those who speculate. Such persons buy huge numbers of sheep, pasture them on the public domain with no thought of preserving the range for the next year, but with the one thought of keeping the sheep only until they can be turned at a profit. I took a hike 10 A.M. to 2 P.M. along Wood River, beginning at Bellevue, and working north for about a mile. The snow was so deep that walking was difficult. The riparian growth here consists largely of Cottonwoods, some alders and an understory of rose bushes and other small shrubs. Black-capped Chickadees were encountered on two occasions. They were in flocks of perhaps 50 and were flitting singly and continuously from tree to tree, feeding from the bare branches. I collected two of them -- Nos. 1652-1653.
