W.B. Davis 1935, Elba, Cassia Co., Idaho. Dec. 31 Yesterday I moved over here to my uncle's ranch - the Wickel Ranch - on Cassia Creek). There is about 8" of snow here on the level and in sheltered places drifts of two feet depth are not uncommon. This afternoon I took a hike down through the field, following Cassia Creek, and then veered south to the juniper clad slopes of the hills. The walking was rather difficult in places where the snow had drifted. Along the creek I saw a flock of juncos and several Song Sparrows. One of the latter was collected. Magpies and Red-shafted Flickers were frequently seen. In the juniper area the Black- tailed Jack Rabbit has made a maze of runways in the snow. In my instances one could see where these animals had been browsing on Artemisia tridentata and Juniperus scopulorum). Small branches of the latter had been broken from the tree and these had evidently been fed on while they were in the snow. I saw hundreds of Jack Rabbits during my four hours in the field.
