There is considerable variation in color, ranging from light - nearly gambelii type - Nos 346 + 95 - to very dark # 335. These extremes are extremes of summer and winter coat color. However, when summer taken animals are compared, # 95 + 346 are still much lighter; the sides are more fulvous; the mid dorsal area is not so dark. All the mice have very distinctly bicolored tails, nearly black dorsally, whitish below. In summer, the eye ring is not so dark and conspicuous.
