The burrows are quite small in circumference diameter also) in most cases and I had some difficulty in getting the Muscle traps set. In almost every case the burrows were less than 6" below the surface. I saw no C. artemisiae, but did see and take two C. elegans. I found them at Kaufman too, but no further down stream. These squirrels had burrows in a dry area that supported scant vegetation near an alfalfa field, they foraged. The whistle of these squirrels is quite similar to that of C. oreagana. I heard several Marmots in the rocky outcroppings near a ranch 2 mi up the creek from Kaufman. The owner of the ranch said they had been doing consider- able damage to his hay crop and that he had been trying to poison them with strychnine on fresh alfalfa with little success. I believe they are mosophora. I set out no mouse nor set traps. Muskrats are reported as being present in the creek.
