W.B. Savo 1935. Rupert, Minidoka Co., Idaho June 15. For the past three days I have been hunting squirrels in Raft River Valley at the river just east of Malta only C. armatus was to be found. I was hunting there late in the afternoon of the 13th and at that time of day the big fat squirrels were stretched out on the mounds near the mouth of the burrows running themselves. I collected two such and they were extremely fat. Those collected at the same time of day that were running around and feeding were young ones and not so fat. At a deserted ranch about 2 mi. S of Malta I found only C. oreganus. They were numerous and quite easily approached. No water save that used to irrigate a nearby alfalfa field was available. This is about the third time I have found them far from a flowing stream of some sort. I don't believe the squirrels require water directly but are attracted by the greener plants found in such areas.
