WB Davis 1935 Elba, Cassia Co., Idaho, June '3. 403 which I failed to collect The whole valley here is covered with Artemisia and Juniperus save along the creek - Cassia Creek - where Alders and Willows are dominant. In Brew Canyon - the canyon through which Cassia Creek flows from Mt. Independence, the dominant trees are Alders lower down and Quaking Aspen. About half way up the canyon evergreen trees - Pinus murrayana, Pseudotsuga taxifolia and Abies monticola are common on the north-facing slopes and in the bottom of the canyon along the creek. On the south facing slopes Mountain Mahogany is the dominant shrub. On the lower hills east of Elba, Juniperus utahensis is the dominant tree - Artemisia being interspersed and going to the top of the ridge. At higher altitudes on Mt. Independence, in association with the evergreens is a species of Arctostaphylos which forms a dense underbrush in some areas. My impressions of life zones)
