Davis 1949 Oct. 17 Melody, Jackson to Oregon to Grants Pass, Josephine Co. Song Sparrows, Linnet's, Thrushes, Steller & Scrubs Jays. Finally ran across a pair of P. fusca in some roadside canoshus by a fence, and took one bird (2025) from the dense canoshus. The other disappeared. Drove on Gall Creek road until oak - Chajarral replaced by shrubs - Douglas fir, returned to old stage road and drove To Jackson at a few miles toward Jackson- tille. Country flat, fenced, cleared, & no good in general. Turned back toward Gold Hill, turned off on Kane Creek road, drove 2 or 3 miles, didn't look good, so retraced our path. About 1 mile from the old stage road saw another pair of P. fusca right in front of a house. Took one from a fence post (2026) and scrammed. Returned to Gold Hill, took Hwy 23 4 out of town, [illegible] and saw another pair of Brown Jowles, in oak trees above a very dense canoshus thicket. Land was fenced, and there were too many cars on highway, so I couldn't shoot. They responded to squeaks, but didn't get within 28 range, so I was scared to use a 1/2 load.
