Davis 1948 Red's Meadow, 7500 ft; Sunahat Trail, Madera Co., Calif. July 8, 1948 set undetermined. It was in the grass + alders by a boggy spot on the trail. The third was seen walking slowly at the edge of an alder thicket by a stream. It was a hen. As I walked toward her, 5 young flew from the grass surrounding the thicket. They were smaller than the first young flushed, but flew well. Mountain Quail were heard hooding at least 4 or 5 times. Heard one Cassin Vireo in the first pine on a high ridge. Hickorys seen commonly. Sap suckers were heard drumming often. Probably Williamsa's. The birds seem about the same on the ridges as down here, save for the grouse + quail. At Fish Creek, the fisherman told me that he had killed one rattler, + chased another down a squirrel burrow. The only mammals noted were golden mantled & Beechey ground squirrels. Bellvigi seems to be replaced by Beecheyi (higher up) lower down Rd. July 9, 1948 In camp all day. July 10, 1948 In a m. walked toward Rainbow Falls, but turned off on Fish Creek Trail just before we hit the falls. Saw 1 Black Swift flying
