Davis 1948 July 3, 1948. Red's Meadow, 7500 ft., Sierra Nat'l For., moderate, calf. Looked for birds. Birds observed today: Williamson Sapsucker, Red-breasted Sapsucker, Bewea, Izard Flycatcher, Violet-green Swallow, Mountain Chickadee, Robin, Hermit Thrush, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Pileolated Warbler, Colmaie Warbler, Audubon Warbler, Western Tanager, Cassin Finch, Oregon Junco, Whitecrowned Sparrow, [illegible], Pine Siskin, Red-breasted Nuthatch. July 4, 1948. In a.m. hunted around Locher Lake, about 1/2 mile NNE of camp. Heard 2 sapsuckers drumming, probably Williamson's. Birds not too plentiful in this country, save along watercourses. On Locher Lake noted 1 California Gull. Saw red- breasted Sapsucker, but unable to shoot it. 3 white-headed woodpeckers seen at S end of Locher Lake. Returned to camp, and then hiked SW of camp. Heard 1 Steller Jay + 2 red- breasted nuthatches. These birds both very scarce here. Noted hairy woodpecker. Col- lected singing of Cassin Finch from about 50 ft. up in a Jeffrey Pine. I flew out as I shot. Around camp, saw a Red-breasted Saps- sucker, probably same one noted yesterday. About 4:15 p.m., Belly & I walked NW of camp,
