NW side of Mt Tefocatepetl, 9700 ft, Mexico, Mex. July 20, 1946 Very hard to find in the heavy undergrowth. Other birds noted: - Hylocharis leucotis, Seta- phaga pisa, Troglodytes trunicollis, Basi- -leuterus belli, Ergatines ruber, Mexican cross- bill (Hardonly), Black-eared Bushtit (heard only), Hutton Vireo, Robin, Catharus sp. (heard only), Sparrow Hawk, Saw-whet Owl (at least 2 heard the night of July 19 & early a.m. of July 20). Broke camp at about 10 a.m. On the way out, at 9200 ft, by a field extending into the pines + firs, ! P. fuscus was noted. 9 mi. S of the Pupo turn-off, the altitude was 7000 ft and we were still on the plateau. 2 mi. farther on the drop-off began. Altitude was 6400 ft & occasional pines were noted by the side of the road. 23 mi. S of the Pupo turn-off, at Cuautlisco, altitude was 4400 feet. At this point we took the turn-off West toward Cuernavaca. 5 mi. W of Cuantlisco, Sugar-cane fields were noted along the road. 9 mi. W of Cuantlisco, at Yantepec, elevation 3900 ft, the country was arid tropical, with some mesquite, maguey, yucca, & Tuna cactus. 4 1/2 mi W of Yantepec, the road starts to rise, and the uncleared hillsides are heavily vegetated with forest sub-shrubs. Where the hillsides have been cleared, the substrate is rocky+gravelly, soil thin, and Grass cover sparse.
