Jalapa, Veracruz, Mex., to Orizaba, Veracruz, Mex. July 10, 1946 because of a broken starter which we had repaired. The altitude at Jalapa is 4800 ft, and the road leading NW rises very sharply along the shoulder of the plateau. Jalapa is about midway between the high plateau and the low tropics, although its faunal affinities seem to be tropical. 8 mi NW of Jalapa on C. N. No 2, alt 5800 ft, we no- ticed pines and oaks, and they conti- nued all the way to Tlote. We continued through Perote with the idea of going to Chalchicomula. The turn-off to this town is at El Seco, which the natives call San Salvador El Seco. It was much as the road to Chalchicomula looked very poor, and since we had been driving through a very bad dust storm, which apparently continued far along toward Chalchicomula, we decided to take the southern route to Vera- Cruz, stopping around Orizaba (town of). We drove back to the road fork, 16 miles east of the city of Puebla, and were in the dust storm all the way. We were out of the dust at the turn- off, however.
