[illegible] July, 1942 I have been looking at the question of whether or not it would be possible to use the existing facilities in order to produce a new type of aircraft engine. The problem is that we do not know what kind of engine we need, and therefore cannot design one which will meet our requirements. The main difficulty lies in the fact that there are no standard sizes for engines used on airplanes today. Each manufacturer makes his own special size according to the power output required by his particular model airplane. This means that if you want to buy an engine from another company, you must first determine exactly what kind of engine your plane needs before ordering anything. Another problem is finding suitable materials for constructing these engines. Most current designs require aluminum alloys or other lightweight metals because they must withstand high temperatures without melting down under pressure loads imposed upon them during flight maneuvers such as banking turns and climbs/descents etcetera.
