K Dixon 1951 Journal 6 Feb 27. Santa Ana Wildlife Refuge, 7 mi. S Alamo, Hidalgo Co., Texas I arrived about 11:30, driving onto the refuge from a levee road which leaves the intersection of a road from Alamo and U.S. Hwy 281. The refuge is reported to be the only natural stand of river bottom timber left along the Rio Grande Valley. Water levels are low around and the trees are just coming out in leaf after the killing frost of January. The custodian's headquarters, a stucco, tile-roofed structure, was formerly a guest hotel (dining room and cottages). I spent most of the afternoon watching mice in the vicinity of the headquarters (see species acct). Birds noted: Turkey Vulture Lennette's Thrasher Golden-fronted Wdpk.
