K Drim 1952 Parus atricris tatus Jan 30 11 mi. NW Vourdanton, 700 ft, Atascosa Co., Texas Scattered clouds - cold, calm. Titmice singing about 15 minutes before sunrise tür tür -- (tür--) 6 or 7 times rapidly. I left camp at 7:25 just as sun cleared horizon. Twice singing in dense brush usually in answer to another titmouse. One sang tür-- then changed to a very rapid sequence chi chi chi---. I watched the individual as it climbed higher in leafless oaks - apparently stimulated by singing from E of lateral road. Black nest pointed, erect; bird apparently alone. Song changed to slower keyta keyta keyta keyta (4 phrases per song) as I left. I crossed road at 8:00 a.m. and into thinner cover of area near windmill where I worked until 28, 1951. Trees (mesquite) were scattered, fewer other tall shrubs as (Diospyros?) - all tree leafless, along fence running NE-SW, north of wind-mill, tit singing tür--, answered by 2 others to E and N. I followed fence NE and heard tit W of fence calling sharply vet vet-- (5/2) nasal upward It moved now and then picked at bark of branchlets in mesquite. (calling continued; sang tür--- from denser brush along swale extending to NE. A second titmouse appeared and calling ceased. One apparently left as my attention was diverted. I saw the second fly to mesquite 15 yards to NW -- no call upon alighting. Song to SE.
