KDixon 1947 Journal June 26. 2 mi W Ft Howee R.S., 7000 ft., Powder River Co, Montana. Found nest Jay Phoebe, evidently only partly constructed, in ledge beneath overhanging portion of rock a few yards NW J camp. Violet-green willows apparently nesting in cavity in rock on steep slope. Returned at 08:10 AM. Heard in cottonwoods about camp during late morning: Bullock Oriole, Black-capped Chickadee, Hummer Wren, Cassin Kingbird Redwing. I went out a few minutes before sunset - grass wet following heavy shower 6:15-6:45 PM. Collected ? Redwing and Brown Thrasher in willows 100 yards upstream from camp. June 27. 2 miles W Ft Howee R.S., 7000 ft., Powder River Co, Montana. Raining lightly as I left camp at 06:30 AM. Proceeded downstream ¼ and collected ? Redwing with ? in willow. Calling alternately with ? in cottonwood 25 yards upstream, evidently territorial boundaries. 50 yards downstream collected Eastern Kingbird. Went across flat into pines on north-facing slope, noting Robins, Clipping Grasshopper, Hummer Wren (1 pair nesting in dead tree), Wood Pewee, Dark Sparrow, Cassin Kingbirds in this area. Bronzed Grackle flew in from stream to perch in pines at edge of grove. Frightened then to Spanish trees from which they returned. I eventually collected the ? of another pair.
